I wrote a patch for what looks like the same problem a while back. It was
invasive enough that rather than commit it directly, I sent it to Greg for his
review. He's busy, and I haven't actually followed up at all. Greg, should I
just commit it and see what happens? I suspect it will take a bit of merging
to get it cleanly into the current master branch...
