Well it depends on your setup, but for example, one of mine turning of
'ping' helped - when it just didn't respond for 30-40 seconds (as was
common at the time) the ping would timeout and the entire replication
would be restarted...  Which when it went down completely because the
upstream router went offline that took out everything.

Turning off the ping ensured the down host would be ignored and the
replication would continue to the other hosts...
