Hard to say - does the Bucardo logs give any indication of the last thing 
the kid did befire hanging?

Ouch. That could certainly be the problem. The listen/notify system has 
changed a *lot* since the 8.4 days. Also, the latest 8.4 is 8.4.21, so 
(as I'm sure you've heard), upgrade! It could very well be a bug fixed 
somewhere - check the release notes for 8.4.11 through 8.4.21.
