Thanks for the reply.  I went ahead and issue 'make install' as root.  And I got the following error messages.   Could you please give me more direction?

# make install
Installing /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8/check_postgres.pl
Installing /usr/share/man/man3/check_postgres.3pm
Installing /usr/bin/check_postgres.pl
Writing /usr/lib64/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/auto/check_postgres/.packlist
Appending installation info to /usr/lib64/perl5/5.8.8/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/perllocal.pod

You should be able to install without doing a 'make test', but the
first step to getting the testing working is addressing this:

You will need to install the DBI and the DBD::Pg Perl modules.
