Thanks, that's a good point, and the documentation is definitely wrong there. 
To further complicate things for anyone who wants to update the docs 
(hint, hint, other committers) is that .pg_service.conf is only available in 9.0 
or better: before that, it must be in /etc/pg_service.conf.
